Cuttin Edge Rootsy – Stone Cutters Union
by Coyote Bill
In the world of the Blues, for an artist to be cutting-edge and modern, yet at the same time remaining rootsy and uphold the more traditional aspect of the genre is not an easy task.
The Stone Cutters Union is a band that does just that. The Kansas City based quartet, comprised of slide guitarist and lead vocalist Sean McDonnell, guitarist/vocalist Matt “FNG” Peters, bassist/vocalist Chris “Blaze” Ruzich, and drummer/vocalist “Lord Chadwick” Chad Williams, combine a diverse blend of influences to create a sound that is equal parts original and tributary, contemporary and time-honored and delivered with panache, virtuosity and a sense of humor to make them one of the most exciting live acts in town.
The Stone Cutters first live performance was in the summer of 2012 at Cutter’s Smokehouse in Eudora, KS. They have been staples on the KC Blues circuit ever since. They honed their style playing frequently at places like the Hideout in Gladstone, Quasimodo in Overland Park and The Phoenix in downtown Kansas City, MO. They were finalists in the KCBS Band Challenge last year, and have performed at the American Royal on a few occasions.
2013 also saw the band record their first CD. “Punetazo De Puma” is a self-produced, five song EP that features 3 original band compositions and rearrangements of 2 Blues classics done in their own inevitable style. Their original songs are all collaborative efforts, usually with one band member coming up with an initial idea, and the other musicians adding their own parts and the song develops from there. They are currently working on new material and hope to have a full length CD out in the near future.
You can catch the Stone Cutters Union onstage in the month of March at Freddy T’s in Olathe KS on the 28th and also at the Phoenix in Kansas City MO on the 29th.
